Shortly after midnight, operators at the coastal observatory noticed a faint pulse repeating every forty seconds. By dawn it had grown strong enough to register on every receiver in the building. Engineers first suspected a fault in their own equipment. They replaced cables, swapped receivers and pointed the dish away from the sea. The signal stayed. “We have checked everything we know how to check,” said the station’s senior engineer. “It is not coming from us.”
